I’d like to say first off that I’m not into Malaysian politics. I never felt the need to pledge a strong allegiance to any political party, nor have I ever attended any DAP ceramahs or rallies by the Opposition. This rally wasn’t political.
Politics is politics - it’s always a dirty game, filled with lies, corruption and empty promises. This will NEVER change. But when politics infringes on a citizen’s basic human rights, when gross injustice is perpetrated, when criminals walk free, when fires of racism is blatantly used to blackmail the masses, that’s when my own boundaries are crossed.
The straw that broke my back was when the Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar signed an order to detain blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin for 2 years without trial. What the fuck was that about. And this was JUST after all the previous bullshit of:
- Detaining MP Teresa Kok because she supposedly submitted a petition to reduce the volume of the azan prayer loudspeakers - when even the council of mosques have stated that she submitted no such thing. Or even if she did, how is this exactly a threat to national security?
- Detaining journalist Tan Hoon Cheng just because she quoted Ahmad Ismail’s racially inflammatory speech. Oh wait, no she was detained cause there was ’supposed threats to her life’. What the heck, does this Syed Hamid think we’re stupid? And Ahmad Ismail - the real racist bastard, merely gets a slap on the wrist.
I mean, I’ve had enough of this. Malaysia’s my home too. RPK is a champion of the people for bravely speaking out against the corrupt government. Some of his racial commentaries may be very caustic, but they are merely truths as he sees it. More likely he was jailed due to his large network of contacts giving him unprecedented dirty information on our leaders. RPK’s detention under the ISA was the only thing BN could do to silence him - short of actually assassinating him (charging him under the sedition act, and banning his site obviously didn’t work).
True, the culprit here is BN, abusing a draconian law to suit their own needs. I know I can’t get rid of BN now, and what’s to stop the next governing party from abusing this same law again?
The very least I could do is to join a peaceful rally yesterday night to voice my discontent at this archaic law. To protest against the unlawful detention of 64 prisoners at Kamunting - some of which have been there for years, torn apart from their families, and abused by the guards and wardens there.
A well edited MalaysiaKini video of yesterday night
Watch till 3:36! I lol-ed
Here are some of my photos:

In front of Dataran Merdeka
It started at about 7pm. The police sent a force to cordon off the entire Dataran Merdeka, and deny the gathering access to the field. So we ended up standing on the main road, causing massive traffic congestion.
Some slight jittery moments when riot police showed up with shields and helmets. But with such a muhibbah group, with Chinese, Malays, Mat Sallehs and MPs amongst the bulk of the Hindraf crowd - I was pretty certain they wouldn’t do anything drastic (as long as we kept our peace - which we did).
Then again, I counted no more than 20 police officers, who pretty much left us to our own devices.

Marching along Jalan Tun Perak (in front of Masjid Jamek station)
Thousands of us marching along with our candles, chanting “Mansuhkan ISA!, Valgha Hindraf!, Bebaskan RPK! and Makkal Sakthi!”

In front of Pudu Pilliayar Temple
We were eventually diverted up the road near Puduraya to Jalan Pudu Lama where the gathering massed for more chants, songs, prayers and interviews.

Lighting some candles along the roadside
The rally lasted until about 9 plus, before we dispersed.
And some awesome photos from Vignes who went as well:
