I finally went to watch Frogway last night! I would have watched it much earlier if I could, but decided to wait for Airin as she wasn’t free on the other days.. Also, it was a full house screening! Luckily I went to buy the tickets the night before..

What caught me completely by surprise was the makeup and costumes that was used by all of the actors & actresses. They were hilarious! I had to suppress my chuckles everytime one of them made a new appearance on stage. So here’s a note of warning - this blog post contains a bunch of photos of the play, so if you are planning to go watch it during its FOUR remaining showtimes, and do not want me to spoil the surprise for you..

READ/SCROLL NO FURTHER. :)
Here’s a simple review based on the characters of the play..

I found Horatio (Thor Kah Hoong) an extremely annoying character - so much so that I just kept wishing for him to stop croaking and disappear off the stage (maybe that was his actual intention?). Or maybe I just have a thing against naggy & whiny old men. However, he also played a ‘Chinesey’ loan shark rat which was ridiculously funny to watch.

Freddy covering Eddy’s mouth - Frogway

Freddy the Toad : Shhhh!

Eddy and Freddy - Frogway

Eddy the Frog & Freddy The Toad

Vince did a good job acting as Eddy the Singing Frog, and boy can Vince really sing! There was this once when his mic stopped working halfway through one of his songs, but he continued singing anyway, and his voice still carried through the hall (EVEN while Ina Fabregas who was having a duet with him had a functional mike).

Helen The Fish Singing - Frogway

Helen the Fish - “Think It Over”

Ina Fabregas (Helen the Fish) who was also one of the Frogettes, was another amazing singer. I think it must have been pretty difficult for her to sing while waving her arms around like a fish the whole time (which was in a very odd way, very hypnotic). I’ve never really heard of her before today, and I’m kinda looking forward to her gigs now (if she has any). And my what pretty scales she has :P.

Freddy’s Lament - Frogway

Freddy the Toad - “Freddy’s Lament”

Ash Nair who played Freddy the Toad cracked me up. I was at the play mainly to support him, but seeing my high school friend ‘let loose’ in that way was downright amusing. :D His solo ‘Freddy’s Lament’ in Act 2 definitely gave him a chance to showcase his vocal prowess. For his first theater appearance, he pulled off a pretty good job. Way to go dude. You should play the air guitar more, you seem to have a knack for it. :D

Suzannah, Eddy and Smiley - Frogway

Suzannah Stork, Eddy the Frog & Smiley the Snake

Then of course we had our 2 villains - Smiley the Snake (Harith Iskander) & Suzannah Stork (Elaine Daly). Harith was pure Harith, funny as ever and almost all of the comedy came direct from his eyes and facial expressions (you need good seats to appreciate this). Together with his partner, they both delivered some very good ‘dumb blonde’ jokes. Elaine Daly was amazing in her role - using a combination of stiffy motions, hip swaying and speaking without lips to get into character. She was of course as beautiful as ever, and was ribbiting to watch. :P

3 Frogettes and Eddy - Frogway

The 3 Frogettes (Chelsia in the middle) & Eddy the Frog - “Frogway!”

The star of the show however would have to go to Chelsia Ng, who played Shirley (one of the 3 Frogettes). It was incredible how she managed to pull off that fake Japanese accent in that kawaii voice. While everyone retained elements of their former selfs in their new roles, Chelsia was probably the only one who managed to literally transform and ‘become the character’. And she could sing in that Japanese accent too!

3 Frogettes, Smiley and Suzannah - Frogway

The 3 Frogettes (Marielle on the left), Smiley the Snake & Suzannah Stork - “Strike It While Its Hot”

Of course, let’s not froget our 3rd Frogette - Marielle Fabregas (Ina’s younger sister), who is only 14 years old! She is definitely way more skilled and matured in her role than most other 14 year olds I know.

Freddy, Fooie and Airin - Frogway

L-R: Freddy, FoOie and Airin!

Freddy, Murat, Moots and friends - Frogway

L-R: Murat, Prema, Moots, Freddy and Riza

Overall, I thought the play was pretty good, but there was a lot that could have been improved on - especially some of the more draggy scenes at the beginning that made me wonder hmm, this is a musical, when are they going to.. sing? It lacked a certain ‘cohesiveness’, as certain parts also sped by too fast eg. ‘Eddy suddenly realizing he was in the wrong..’ The characters, although a joy to watch, weren’t deep enough to strike an emotional chord in me. Maybe I was expecting a little bit more drama :) .

Don’t get me wrong, you should STILL watch this - because even if its not perfect, it still ranks VERY HIGH on my ‘entertainment scale’. If you enjoy Harith’s stand up comedy, you will see many elements of his absurd style in this play, and you will definitely love it all the more. I doubt there will be another play like this in the near future, so catch it for its uniqueness and novelty while you can. It’s a light hearted great way to spend 2 hours… IF you can afford the pricey tickets that is.. :P Go Toaday! (I had to squeeze that pun in somewhere.. hehe)

hehe nice one :) i thought the mix of speech+songs was ok. maybe it’s a personal preference — i have yet to watch a full-fledged malaysian musical that i do not dislike.. (hint: m: the opera) and maybe cos this one is not a full-fledged musical, maybe that’s why i like it :P

Hallo! This sort of ‘movie’ is unfortunately no available in my ‘village’! Seem most interesting! BTW tq for dropping at my site! Have a nice day!
