Airin recently got robbed by snatch thieves just outside her rented house in Bukit Gasing last week.

Hearing about it made my blood boil.

She parked her car a few houses down the road, and as she was walking towards it, 2 guys on a motorbike sped towards her. She barely had time to react. She lost her company laptop (and the laptop bag that I once bought with her), her handbag, wallet (including credit cards and everything else), and handphone (her 2nd handphone lost this month). The pillion rider was even carrying a parang. When they left only did she realize she had a long bleeding gash on her arm.

Luckily the wound wasn’t too deep, and no stitches was required. I just wish I could at least have been with her when it happened, so she didn’t have to visit the doctor in tears, or settling everything else in the police station by herself. Just thinking about this incident makes me insanely furious (to the point of being bloodthirsty), as well as extremely frustrated (both at my own helplessness and the uselessness of our stupid government).

And this wasn’t the only encounter my loved ones had with snatch thieves..

A few years ago, my mum’s handbag was stolen 3 steps in front of me as we were walking to our cars after a wedding dinner. They used a large cutter to slice right through her bag’s handle in one swift motion. LUCKILY she wasn’t hurt or wasn’t dragged on the floor. None of us could even react fast enough to give chase.

Many months later, my mum got a call from the police stating that they have apprehended the thief. The STUPID thief apparently still had my mum’s SIM card in his bag when he was caught. Well, my mum bravely went to court to testify, and the thief gave her the evil eye just before he was sentenced to 3 years in prison. Serves him right, though I’d rather that he was sentenced in a Syariah court and had his hand chopped off instead.

Here’s more,

My maid was taking my youngest brother to tuition a few years ago, and she had his art bag slinged over her shoulder. Well, up came the snatch theft and off went the bag. I hope he enjoyed his catch of sketch and exercise books.

Charlie (my brother’s girlfriend) who stays in a rented room a road away, also had her handbag snatched recently.

In fact, everyone in my house has seen snatch thefts occur right outside our house since its located very near the SS2 town center, and is just a few meters away from the walking lanes (high pedestrian traffic). The main road is just right behind my house, making it an easy escape for the thieves. You would often hear some loud shouting or screaming, and the sound of an engine speeding off and you don’t have to guess to know what just happened.

The SHITTY thing is, there’s nothing we can do about it. EXCEPT start taking justice into our own hands.

I hope I’m never given the opportunity to exact MY form of punishment on these people. I can be very understanding when it comes to the circumstances influencing various social ills among us - but for some strange reason, with snatch thieves, I think I’d go over the edge and end up leaving my very own ‘lasting damage’ before calling the cops.. (like driving my car over their knees/ankles a few times)..

Ladies, please be very very careful out there. EVERY girl I know has either had her handbag snatched before, or know a friend who had become a victim at one time or another. It’s way too rampant and out of control now - and you most definitely can’t rely on the police. If it hasn’t happened to you YET, it MIGHT one day. I even know of people who have had multiple encounters. PLEASE stay vigilant.
