Attended Explosions In The Sky yesterday night at Ruum’s KL with Immi, Cheese and Yin. Their appearance here caused quite a big deal, as they are pretty much big names in the post rock scene and Malaysia was 1 of ONLY 2 Asian stops during their performance tour (the other being Taiwan).
Now, I would never have heard of this band had it not been for Facebook Events. Curious, I immediately went onto Youtube to check out some of their stuff, and I was blown away. I RSVPed my attendance without a second thought (even if the ticket costs RM110). And they definitely didn’t disappoint.

Minimalistic setup, with a huge LED screen. As if we didn’t know who they were..
From Texas, Explosions In The Sky comprises of just 3 guitarists, and a drummer (yup, no bass, no vocalists). Purely instrumental, they performed a wonderful emotional blend of rock that grips you and tows you along just like any well written orchestra.

The music they play (and its kin) are of a completely different genre in my books. In most ordinary songs with singers, the song’s message is often clear and already being told through its lyrics - we only relate that way, and there is very little room to maneuver in regards to interpretation.
However, songs played by instrumental experts like Explosions In The Sky are what I would could musical art incarnate. Because there is NO singing, interpretation is open to every individual. Their songs often mean completely different things to different people. The melodies, rhythms, epic crescendos, tug at heartstrings, and conjure up images and memories, both sorrowful and happy. They paint pictures of everybody’s lives in different ways.

The crowd
I find myself with my eyes closed most of the time, swaying and moving to the music - just like everyone else in the audience. Completely lost in a world of my own, I only opened them every now and then just to remind myself that I’m still there (and to take photos). Some of us were smiling, I struggled to hold back tears. It was a transcendental soulful experience, and a gig like no other.
