Another 2 days, another 2 movies..
I think I should start a movie review site too - What do you say K-dawg? ![]()
Popped another ‘randomly selected’ DVD from my unwatched stack into my DVD player on Thurs Night (16.08.07)..
Almost Famous (2000)

Which 16 year old kid has never dreamed about going on a road trip with a rock ‘n’ roll band? (or run off somewhere and be exposed to all the glamor and glory of celebrity life) Well, this movie explores JUST that. A semi-autobiography about the director Cameron Crowe, who DID join a rock ‘n’ roll band tour to write an article for the Rolling Stones when he was 16. It’s a tale of growing up, of pubescent innocence, and a journey of self discovery. Of course, don’t forget to throw in a smattering dose of love, acceptance, friendship, loyalty, respect, fame, and loss (ok that sounded cliched - but heck, the movie did contain all of it).
Surprisingly, I could RELATE to this movie (don’t ask how or why). Kate Hudson was a delight to watch as the carefree Penny Lane. Patrick Fugit was decent enough as the 16 year old Rolling Stone journalist William Miller. Great performances, great script and tight directing. Excellent use of music - this show almost brought out the adolescence in me again. ![]()

(While cradling a semi-conscious Penny)
William Miller : I love you.. And I’m about to boldly go where… *pause* Many men have gone before…
On Wednesday (15.08.07), me, Jacq and Andrew decided to head over to Andrea’s place to watch:
Little Children (2006)

This is a beautifully filmed movie, with great performances by its cast. It tells the story of Sarah Pierce a housewife (played by Kate Winslet), and Brad Adamson a housefather (Patrick Wilson) who are trapped in loveless marriages. Well, you know how it is as an affair begins to develop. Meanwhile, also intertwined with the scandal, is the tale of a convicted paedophile who is constantly harassed by an ex-cop.
I know it sounds simple - but I assure you that this movie was far from it. From the deep brooding narrative, focus on ambient sounds instead of a soundtrack, the constant stale colours - the director infuses a sense of foreboding very early on into the show. In fact the ominous feeling gets so bad towards the end, you keep expecting the worse to happen - but the script merely veers you somewhere else. You can’t help but feel sorry for all the characters, how trapped they are by their circumstances because you know it can very well easily happen to you. It made me feel both excessively melancholic and contemplative - and not many movies do that..
As was mentioned during our ‘post movie’ discussion - This isn’t the sort of movie that makes you want to cry - it’s the sort that makes you feel fucked up. And it does that very well.
At the time of posting, this movie has a rating of 8.0/10 (14,339 votes). It has 3 oscar nominations, while winning 12 awards and 22 other nominations.
(Brad and Sarah are having sex)
Brad Adamson: Do you feel bad about this?
Sarah Pierce: No, I don’t.
Brad Adamson: I do. I feel really bad.
